Mathematics made simple with "Simplest Calculation"

The thing that sets polytechnics apart from traditional institutions can be summed up in two words: applied learning. It focuses on the integration between the in-depth study found at universities with practical, technology-based skills training.

This form of education is a unique characteristic of polytechnics. It is intense and highly technical, but also incredibly rewarding. Quite similar to universities and colleges, there are student organizations and clubs at polytechnics. What differs is they are enriched further by the industry connections and real-world opportunities that the school and its faculty provide.

Polytechnics are often chosen over the others because of their low academic requirements, affordable tuition fees and the hands on experience. Due to the first factor mentioned, there are some diploma students who require additional help academically. On the 3rd of February 2018, the Magic Maths Organisation were invited by Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah located in Kulim, Kedah, to lecture on calculation techniques that could simplify mathematics which would help them improve significantly.

Participants focusing solving problems using the magic methods

The program was held in Dewan Muazam Shah, Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah, Kulim, Kedah from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM. The students were specifically selected by the establishment. A total of 80 first-semester diploma students were chosen from the mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and civil engineering departments. The quadratic equations, polynomials equations, partial fractions and differential equations were few of the many topics discussed on that day. Many of the techniques taught helped participants save time and enable them to double check their answers. This clearly made an impact including to the teaching staff.

The responses from the participants were very positive. One of the lecturers from the department shared that the program helped in improving the participants’ confidence in tackling mathematical problems. They also feel like the course should be attended by not only first-semester students. The techniques and methods could interest participants of further levels. In addition to that, a feedback mentioned that teachers and lecturers should be exposed to these techniques and methods to further empower their lecturing skills.

Lecturers who are willing to do so could have an array of methods and techniques, new and traditional in their teaching arsenal. The Magic Mathematics Organisation were thrilled with the responses and feedback of the participants who were looking forward to more events similar to this in the future.
